There is a grotto in Civita which is all that remains of St. Bonaventure’s house. Patron saint of Bagnoregio, born in 1217 in Civita, Bonaventure was a devoted follower of St. Francis of Assisi.
According to his writings, St. Francis healed Bonaventure from a serious disease while still a little boy. Later, Bonaventure embraced the same love for Gods creation and creatures as he saw the imprint of God in them, transmitting these teachings throughout his life and ministry.
St. Bonaventure studied God in His creatures, in the Scriptures, on the Cross, in the life of St. Francis and in his own. He did not crave knowledge, but only by his own words: “I shall study Thee solely to love Thee!”
